Pump it Up...at Work

Tips for Pumping at Work

Pumping is already challenging for a new mother, but pumping at work adds another layer to your already busy day!   Often times, your pumping sessions are cut short due to meetings and deadlines, so it's a challenge to maximize the amount of time you have to pump.

Here are some shortcuts I've found to make pumping process quicker at work:

  • Get a good pump: I have a Medela In Style pump, which works pretty well so far.
  • Rechargeable batteries: These came in handy because I would have to pump on the go from time to time - usually in my car. I would keep charging them while at work so I would not have to worry about the battery life for my pump.

  • After pumping, place pumping parts into a large ziploc bag or ziploc container and put it back in the fridge.  This saves on time consuming washing of parts as well as the "What are you washing" explanations that you may have to give your coworkers.  This was a game changer for me!!

  • Medela wipes or equivalent can be used to clean the parts quickly.

  • Using your regular nursing bra as a hands free bra:  Initially I was using the hands free pumping bra, but I realized I was able to place the pumps into my regular nursing bra and it will stay in place through the pumping.  Using this method, I was able to be on my laptop working away.
